Ivan “Funkboy” Bodley
"iBOD" (2006)

(Ivan Bodley: Producer, Arranger, Bandleader, Electric and Acoustic Bass) available at:
www.cdbaby.com/cd/ivanbodley2

The release of “iBOD" marks Ivan’s recorded debut as a solo artist. Standing behind so many legends of soul, funk, jazz, R&B, and rock and roll for over 20 years has apparently given him many ideas! On this CD he combines jazz and funk, rhythm and harmony, blues and soul, with just a little commentary on the human condition thrown in for good measure. And who doesn’t like a little chank-a-chank with their Thelonius Monk?

Back in the swing era, jazz was the dance music of it’s day. Funkboy updates the genre by encouraging a little booty movement along with the complex harmonies and soaring melodies. On ”iBOD” He even takes two traditional songs, one a Native American lullaby, another an Jewish folk tune, and reharmonizes them in a jazz style over funk grooves. The results are guaranteed to be unlike anything currently in rotation on your MP3 player.

Ivan produced, arranged and recorded this project in the Funklab, his studio in Brooklyn, NY. He is joined on the disc by a few of NYC’s top players: Gil Parris-guitar phenom, Ben Stivers-keyboard genius, and Ronny Drayton-guitar wunderkind. All other sounds on the CD are generated by the Funkboy on four and five-string basses, piccolo bass (which is voiced similar to electric guitar), percussion, programming and voice.

Jazz/Funk Unit
"Beauty Is Only Knee Deep" (1995)

(Ivan Bodley: Producer, Arranger, Bandleader, Electric and Acoustic Bass) available at:
wwww.cdbaby.com/cd/ivanbodley1.

This is my solo CD. Don't let the band name mislead you. It features performances by Corey Glover from Living Colour, master percussionist Raphael Cruz, myself, and my compatriots from Berklee. I arranged jazz standards with modern funk, R&B, and Latin beats and opened up the format for some serious playing. I got tons of airplay, some national TV spots, some excellent reviews (see below), and an even headlined at the world-famous Blue Note in NYC. I'm very proud of it.

Reviews of this artist and CD:

With Jazz/Funk Unit: "Bassist/bandleader Ivan Bodley lives up to the description of his sound: bebop with bump. He gives backbeat to modern standards." -Billboard

"Bassist/producer Ivan Bodley gets to make syncopated groove music out of jazz standards. It's feisty and fun." -Nelson George, Playboy

Jazz Jackpot! Review: "Impassioned and equally intelligent, featuring Bodley's buzz-like bass work. Hats off to the Jazz/Funk Unit." -CMJ

"**** [four stars]. Jazz/Funk Unit tight and swinging, delightfully different." -The Music Paper

"Ivan Bodley, producer, arranger, and bassist….I'm happy to inform you the record is at least twice as interesting as the accompanying story." -Jazziz

"Burning, man…."-Rich Appleman, Bass Department Chairman, Berklee College of Music

Stephen Lynch

“The Craig Machine” (2005)

"A Little Bit Special" (2000)

(HaHa/What Are Records?)

(Ivan Bodley: Producer, Electric and Acoustic Bass, Percussion, Keys, Vocals) available at: www.stephenlynch.com

Lynch is a musical comedian who’s been taking the world by storm. He’s been featured on Comedy Central, starred on Broadway in “The Wedding Singer,” and generally just burned up the comedy charts all over the country. “A Little Bit Special” is his first full-length CD which I produced and played on. “The Craig Machine” we recorded live in NYC. It's a lot of fun.

Raphael Cruz

"A Mano"(1999)

"Bebop Timba" (2003) Grammy Nominated, Best Latin Jazz Album!
(Ivan Bodley: co-Producer, Acoustic and Electric Bass) available at: www.cdbaby.com/cd/raphaelcruz

These are burning Latin/Jazz CDs from master percussionist Raphael Cruz. We arranged jazz standards in heavy Latin styles for a quintet. In my opinion, “A Mano” is my finest recorded acoustic bass work to date, especially that 300 bpm bass solo on "Cherokee!" I play a smoking version of “So What” on “Bebop Timba” that got nominated for a stinkin’ Grammy!

Sophie B. Hawkins

"Wilderness" (2004)

(Trumpet Swan Records)

(Ivan Bodley: Bass on one track, “Feelin’ Good,” uncredited, unfortunately, but that’s me). Produced by The Berman Brothers ("Who Let the Dogs Out")

Uncle Carl

Uncle Carl (1977)

Bring Me Your Children (2002)

Sha-Shu Records

(Ivan Bodley: Acoustic Bass) available at: www.cdbaby.com

Uncle Carl is a great songwriter, very unique and very gifted. There are some Tom Waits and Randy Newman influences here, but it's definitely all Carl. I've been in his band since 1994 and loved every minute of it.

Ben Jelen

"Give It All Away" (2003)

(Maverick Records)
(Ivan Bodley: Electric Bass on 2 tracks), info at: www.maverickrc.com.
Produced by The Berman Brothers ("Who Let the Dogs Out")

Pipes & Drums of the NYPD Emerald Society

"Out of the Blue" (2003)

(Ivan Bodley: Acoustic Bass on two tracks)

That's right, me and 100 NYPD cops in kilts with bagpipes! It's a great CD and an experience I will not soon forget.

"Northfork" Motion Picture Soundtrack, Stuart Matthewman (Sade) with Chocolate Genius (2003)

(Cottonbelly Records)

(Ivan Bodley: Acoustic Bass on end title theme with Chocolate Genius), info at: www.cottonbelly.com.

Various Artists, "Burnzey's Last Call" Motion Picture Soundtrack (1999)

(Ripe & Ready/Cellsum Records)

(Ivan Bodley: Electric Bass on two tracks with The Uptown Horns and with Crispin Cioe) available at: http://www.crispinmusic.com/Burnzy_CD/burnzy_cd.html

This is a fascinating soundtrack concept from a cool independent film. The film music was derived from an imaginary juke box with imaginary artists, detailed extensively in the CD liner notes. In actual fact the musicians on this CD are: Deborah Harry, David Johansen, The Smithereens, Graham Parker, Evan Dando, Lou Christie, The Uptown Horns and Crispin Cioe.

"Mighty Sam" McClain

"Your Perfect Companion" EP (1994)

(Orleans Records)

(Ivan Bodley: Electric Bass on two tracks: "Your Perfect Companion," and "Why") available at: www.orleansrecords.com

This is my first ever commercially available recording. Bluesman "Mighty Sam" McClain, recorded in New Orleans by producer Carlo Ditta. Besides being historically important to me personally, this is a great glimpse into the workings of a master blues and soul man.

AJ Loria / King Nino

“It’s a Mardi Gras World” (2003) KIMIK Records, available at: www.ajloria.com

"Louisiana Lounge Lizard" (2000) (Ivan Bodley: Producer, Acoustic and Electric Bass), available at: www.ajloria.com

I first played the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage festival with AJ's band: "King Nino & the Slave Girls." These are studio outings with some of those songs and new material and new arrangements. The tracks that I play on CDs were recorded in Brooklyn in three days with musicians from New Orleans, Tokyo, and NYC. It's funky, diverse, impromptu, and fun.

Frankie Paris & Cold Sweat

"10 Shades of Blue" (2001)

(Ivan Bodley: Electric Bass, co-arranger, artwork), available at: www.frankieparisandcoldsweat.com

Ruth Gerson

"Fools & Kings" (1996) (Produced by Don Dixon)

"Not Around Town" (1998) (Live)

"Wish" (1998) EP

(Ivan Bodley: Electric and Acoustic Bass, Photography), available at: www.ruthgerson.com

The live CD "Not Around Town" has some great bass solos on it. All three CDs were great vehicles for pop/songwriter bass playing, especially the Don Dixon produced platter.
